From Subways to Connection: Helping Older Adults Thrive in a Digital World

It's a cold day in NYC. The kind of day where the subway screeches a little louder, and the steam rising from manholes feels like the city's way of exhaling. Bundled up in my coat, gloves, and hat, I step onto the train, reflecting on what brought me here—not just to this moment but to the journey of building Boomernology.

Helping older adults navigate technology is much more than troubleshooting or installing updates. It's about connection. It's about learning who they are, where they came from, and how they've lived their lives. It's inspiring, humbling, and—without a doubt—the most rewarding work I've ever done.

Finding Stories Behind the Screens

Take software updates, for example. If you've ever stared at a spinning wheel or watched a percentage bar inch upward, you know how agonizing those minutes can feel. For me, though, those moments are golden opportunities.

Recently, I was helping a client update his laptop. As we waited for the progress bar to do its thing, I asked about his career. In just ten minutes, I learned he had moved to NYC in the 1980s with nothing but a suitcase and a dream of becoming a writer. He shared stories of working as an editor, climbing his way to success, and eventually publishing several acclaimed books.

At one point, he chuckled and asked, "What made you want to start a business like this?" I smiled and said, "Because I get to meet incredible people like you." And that's the truth. Every client's story is a reminder that this work isn't just about fixing devices—it's about building connections.

Empowering Through Connection

The greatest part of what I do is hearing my clients' stories. Some tell me about starting businesses from scratch, raising families, or moving to New York City from far-off places. Others share their passions—gardening, painting, pickleball, or cooking. Every story reinforces that we all bring something unique to the table, regardless of age or tech experience.

In return, I share my own journey: the leap from working in law firms to following my dream of bridging the digital divide. I tell them about my bike rides through the city, knocking on doors in every kind of weather, fueled by countless cups of coffee and an unwavering belief in what I'm building. What started as an idea has grown into something much bigger—a way to make a real difference in people's lives.

More Than Just Tech Support

Technology might be the reason I walk into a client's home, but it's the personal connections that keep me coming back. Whether I'm installing software or explaining the finer points of online shopping, there's always room for a laugh, a story, or a heartfelt conversation.

One client, for instance, shared how isolated she felt living alone. Her computer had been frozen for months, and she'd given up trying to connect with her loved ones online. By helping her fix her Wi-Fi and unlock her computer, she could stay "in touch" with her family again. She said, "It feels like they're right here in the apartment with me," even though they were oceans away.

Moments like these remind me why I do what I do. It's not just about solving tech problems—it's about empowering people to stay connected, engaged, and seen.

Chasing Dreams, Big and Small

Helping others with their tech dreams has inspired me to chase mine with the same passion. Building Boomernology hasn't been easy. Every subway ride, bike ride, cold day knocking on doors, and brutally humid afternoon spent promoting my services has been worth it. Why? because this journey isn't just about technology. It's about building relationships, fostering connections, and celebrating the joy of what makes us human.
